ReplyDeleteI have watched southpark since middle school, and I haven't really noticed the politics involved with some of the episodes. This class brought to my attention just how much shows like southpark can influence viewers opinions on politics or important topics of society today. Now i watch this show differently.

ReplyDeleteThis is a clip from the tv show Family Guy that talks about undecided voters and also makes fun of the speeches that candidates give. The dog talks about how undecided voters are the biggest idiots on the planet and that if you give them short, simple answers and nothing too complicated then they will suck it right in. I think that this is telling us that it is important to be a knowledgeable citizen, whether you decide to vote or not. being able to read the underlying message of these types of shows is something important and is something this class helped to teach me.

ReplyDeleteEver since middle school I have watched Family Guy, and this is a clip from the show talking about how controlling the FCC is for programs on television. This show brings about points that deal with everyday life in our society and makes fun of them, called Satire, which I learned about in class. Now, when I watch the show, I understand things in a different perspective and not just as a program strictly meant for humor.

ReplyDeleteOne of my most favorite shows of all time would have to be Tom and Jerry, that use to air on Cartoonnetwork. One of the main reasons why this show appealed to me was because of how colorful each episode was, in every scene. As a child, I loved to color and paint, and watching a show that had every color a child could think of, was simply amazing! When dealing with the course, Tom and Jerry reminds me of surreal paintings with all kinds of abstract images around the paintings. The show was mixed with different scenes that, at times, did not make sense, which ultimately made each episode unique.

ReplyDeleteOne of my mom's favorite TV shows growing up was All in the Family. She loved it so much, she even bought the dvd collection for our house. When I used to watch when I was younger, I didn't they were as funny as I do now because I understand a lot more of the humor now that I'm older. I like the family atmosphere and different distinct personalities of all the characters. This TV clip relates to class because Professor Funk even showed a clip of an episode, and my thoughts immediately turned towards my mom and how much she loves it.

ReplyDeleteFor the past few years I've watched the show King of Queens. Throughout the life of the show, a married couple (Doug and Carrie) support Carrie's father (Auther) who lives with them. There are always arguments between Auther and the couple because of the generation gap. It is similar to so many different situations in work and education in which a generation gap causes issues. In class we have talked about how different types of music/art are viewed differently by certain generations. Great show.

My favorite tv show is Modern Family. My brother got me to start watching it a while ago and now I love it. It is really unique and has a lot of satire about things that everyone can relate to. The show does a good job of representing our world today because there is a "normal" family with 3 kids, an older man with a hot young wife, and a gay couple with an adopted baby. It deals with some big issues, but is funny at the same time, kind of like All in the Family was. This clip is the trailer and it does a pretty good job of summing up the show!

ReplyDeleteThis is a clip from the TV show Family Guy. In the clip, Peter and a soccer mom get a little to into the game and overreact at how their children are playing. This uses satire, which is something we learned in class, to make fun of how some parents overreact to kids' sports. It means something to me, because I have witnessed this in my childhood sports career.

ReplyDeleteThe above link is to a documentary on PBS's Independent Lens about Herb & Dorothy Vogel, a Ney York City couple who have been collecting art for over 50 years. I've seen this once or twice and thought that it was relevent to our class, being that they were very involved with New York City artists from the late 50's up until present, all types of art we discussed in class.
It is a very cool documentary and they are the cutest elderly couple you will ever see - I definitely suggest checking this out!

ReplyDeleteThe video I posted on the blog is the opening to an anime called Death Note. This show is notorious to being one of the best anime ever made. It is really witty and is a short series. There are 37 episodes and I personally loved the first 25 and the last episode. Basic summary of the story is that there is this man name Kira who gets a book with special power. If you write someones name in the book they will die. Kira basically tries to use the book for good.
This relates to our class because we talked about different anime. I'm surprised Mr. Funk did not talk about this one because this one is so popular. I just thought I introduce it to you guys and maybe you guys will check it out yourself.

ReplyDeleteOne interesting thing that I learned from this class is about "All In The Family". When we watched it in class and discussed the show, I knew it seemed familiar to me so I asked my mom if she knew of it. She quickly reminded me that it was her family's favorite show growing up. My grandpa would have the whole family be home to watch it together. So the next weekend when I went home, I went to my grandma's house and we watched some episodes online and she loved it! It reminded her of the wonderful times she had with my grandpa. Both my grandma and mom sang along to the introduction song, knowing it word by word even though they had not heard it in 30 years or so. I loved learning about a television show that my mom grew up watching compared to today's shows.

One of my favorite movies of all time is probably Troy. It came out in 2004 and stars Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom. I have always loved Greek Mythology and I think that has to do a lot with why I like the film so much. Brad Pitt is also one of my favorite actors and he has a huge role in Troy as Achilles. Before Art Education I never knew why I got so caught up in this movie, but now I know it is because the director an awesome job at using suspended disbelief. The costumes and makeup have always fascinated me and the acting is awesome. If you have never seen Troy it is definitely worth watching, especially for the fight scene between Hector the Great and Achilles.

ReplyDeleteThis clip is from HBO's series "The Wire." This is one of my favorite shows to watch because of the great depth that the director goes to in order to create realistic characters. In this scene, the "ghetto Robin Hood" Omar sends out a message that has proved to be one of the series' most famous lines. This type of television program draws from both epic novels, and plays.

ReplyDeleteI have always loved the Cosby Show. We learned about social issues on television and I thought this was a good film clip. Television lost its innocence when it depicted family fights and the social conflicts. I like this clip because I think its ironic how Vanessa gets into a fight because two girls at her school think she’s rich. Usually people get into fight because of arguments but Vanessa gets into a fight because they girls were calling her a rich girl. I also like it because it’s funny when Mr. Cosby is excited about the fight and is very interested how Vanessa took both girls at the same time. I also like when Mrs. Cosby incorporates how Vanessa they work hard for the money referring to the songs which we also listened to in class. The Cosby show is an all around a typical family who loves each other and cares for each other. They also have there ups and downs but stick together through it all.

ReplyDeleteI could have sworn I posted this on May 24th with my other posts, but I could not find it so here we go again. This clip is from the movie "That Thing You Do." I like this film as I feel it provides a glimpse into the music era of the 1960s, which was obviously before my time. My mom told me when she was young she went to see the Beatles in concert in Cleveland, and its hard to imagine her as one of those screaming girls in the audience. This post is relevant to the class through the lectures we had on American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show, which follows a very similar format to the performance shown in the clip and was popular at the time.

ReplyDeleteThis is a clip from southpark that is making from of facebook. I have always watched southpark growing up and always loved to watch how they used satire draw attention to different issues. When you sit down and actually pay attention to the show there are actually alot of hidden opinions on different things that they show.

ReplyDeleteI grew up watching Roseanne reruns on television, but I never knew that the show was really the first of its kind. I always liked Roseanne because of the crude humor. The full seasons are on netflix now and I watch an episode from time to time. It's interesting to watch the show as an adult and really pick up on all of the hot-button issues that the show covers. It deals with just about every issue our society has/does avoid(ed) talking about. In the episode in the link I listed above, Roseanne finds out that her boss is gay.

ReplyDeleteThis is a clip from The Boondocks. It has been one of my favorite shows since it came out a few years ago. Even though it does get ridiculous at times, it attempts to make valid points. This clip, for example, talks about what has become of the "black community". I do think that it is a bit exaggerated, but I believe that using comedy to address social issues is one of the best ways to get to people.

ReplyDeleteThe above clip is from the television show Family Guy. In this clip, Peter is unbelievably ignorant and acts in an offensive way toward someone that he assumes is Italian. Unlike watching Roseanne when I was younger, I have watched Family Guy throughout high school and college. The show is funny because of the ridiculous behavior of the characters. The show has made fun of probably every single inappropriate topic that exists through its satire. We talked about satire and how South Park was the first to be in the satirical cartoon genre. Family Guy is very similar, but does not use rough animation in addition to the satire like South Park does.

ReplyDeleteI have recently started watching Modern Family and it has quickly become one of my favorite shows. Before this class, I just viewed the show as a comedy and I loved how funny it was. Now, after taking this art education class, I have learned more about the social and societal aspects of the show in relation to the gay couple and the stereotypical view of the "gold-digging" wife with an older man. It makes the show more interesting to watch.
