I have always enjoyed listening to the velvet underground. I grew up listening to this song with my dad. Until this class, i haven't thought of this as minimalist music. It seems nothing like that annoying music we listened to in class. It's weird to think something so simple as minimalist music could have so many different aspects and genres.

discussion of the kent state shootings in class really made me focus on the close relationship art and music have with the changing culture. during this time, the whole world was changing and music and art kept up with this change.i appreciate the fact that an artists such as these men would take part in supporting the protests and revolution.

This song by the Sex Pistols called "Problems" talks about how they're are too many problems. They also sing the lyrics, "Don't give me any orders, for people like me there is no order". In class, we learned about how this was a period of change and rebellion and that doing more of the wrong thing and what was against the norm was something that was becoming popular and this was why this band become so well-known.

This song by Lil Wayne called "Hustler Musik" is all about how he has to make money to survive and how hard it is. Lil Wayne stated it was one of his favorite songs to record, and was very popular among his audiences. In class, we learned about artists who changed the music industy for their genre and Lil Wayne definitely changed rap. He is deemed as one of the best rappers of all time.

A genre of music that emerged in the 1980's and became really popular in the 1990's was alternative rock. We learned about different groups who play music from this type of music in class, and this happens to be a song by my favorite alternative rock group, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

One genre of music that really catches my interest is the gospel/christian genre. I love this music style because it keeps me close to my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on a day-to-day basis. Soul music was first recognized in the early 1960s, which led to gospel music in years to come. One of the most influential artists of gospel was Aretha Franklin. Though mostly known for Soul music, she had a part to play in the early findings of gospel music. This song "I Say A Little Prayer," is one of her originals when she was starting out as a singer.

Another music genre that I enjoy is the Pop and R&B genres of music. These genres also came out of the "Soul" movement of music, and had a great impact on the music industry. Some of most well-known artists in these genres are: James Brown (Pop), Michael Jackson (Pop), and Boys II Men (R&B). I like these genres because after a long day at school or work, they allow me to loosen up and enjoy my evenings with friends and my girlfriend. These two clips are some of my favorite songs in these genres, and I hope you enjoy!

This song by Queen is called "Bohemian Rhapsody", which I'm sure many of you have heard. Since I've always been kind of a loner, I feel I can relate to Freddie's prospective in this song as an outsider struggling with being different (if I interpreted it correctly). This piece relates to the Hard/Glam rock we covered in the course and is mentioned on page 106-107 of the text. If you're unfamiliar with Queen, we watched a music video of them dress in drag in class called "I Want to Break Free".

This song is called "Long Tall Sally" by Little Richard. I first heard this song in the movie "Predator", and I always think of the movie when I hear the song. This course exposed me to the influence blues had on Little Richard, which I never really thought about before considering how loud and fast the song plays. This song is related to the class because we specifcally covered early rock-and-roll with its blues and jazz backgrounds. Little Richard is mentioned on page 39 of the text.

  12. I have always really liked Queen because both of my parents listened to them while I was growing up, so I've been around it a lot. I've known Freddie Mercury was gay and that he died from AIDs, but I never knew how open the entire band was about their sexuality. I respect the band even more now for being so brave and unique. The class has opened my eyes to a lot of different bands and now I appreciate them all more. This clip is of my favorite song by Queen called Somebody to Love

  13. I know everyone thinks he's crazy, but Michael Jackson is my favorite artist of all time. I really think he got skipped over in class, but most people of our generation are pretty familiar with him already. I really think he raised the bar for music videos and turning songs into tiny movies. The most obvious example of this is Thriller, but my clip is of The Earth Song because isn't as well known and I figured maybe more people haven't seen it.

  14. I agree with Michael Jackson being slighted in class. He is my favorite artist of all time although he was a strange man. Even as a child his music changed the entire scene and raised the bar for everyone else. In my opinion he was easily the most talented young artist ever and he only continued to get better. I found a clip from an episode of American Bandstand (which we discussed in class)of the Jackson 5 performing "I Want you Back." Hopefully most of you have heard this. I'm also going to post a link to a song in his adult career called "Human Nature"; one of his best in my opinion. Enjoy.

  15. During one of the presentations (I believe it was during the 90's presentation) we covered the East-West rap feud. This was primarily between Bad Boy and Death Row and Notorious B.I.G and Tupac were the primary rappers. Below is my favorite Notorious B.I.G song ever. The song is called notorious thugs. The music of these two men was heavily influential on the history and future of rap music and they are still regarded as the two best rappers ever.

  16. I don't know how many of you listen to Eminem but I think he is the most influential rapper ever. He really made a name for himself and has become the apex of a primarily black world of rap. Eminem has definitely changed rap, as a genre, for the better and added diversity. Below is the link to his newest song called "Fast Lane" with Royce da 5'9" which is pretty awesome.

  17. I really liked the 90's presentation because I feel like it discussed a very important revolution in hard rock music called grunge. Some of the prominent groups during this time were Nirvana and Alice in Chains, who happen to be two of my favorite rock bands. The songs listed below are classic songs from the 90's that I'm sure I will still be listening to 20 years from now.

This song is "Lucky" by Britney Spears, and I love it so much because it reminds me of when I was younger and used to LOVE her. I had every one of Britney's CD's, and this song was definitely one of the best in my opinion. The song discusses how a famous star is "lucky" on the outside, but on the inside is actually very lonely. It has a great beat and is just a pleasant song for me to listen to. We never specifically talked about Britney Spears in class, but we did talk about how we are free to interpret art in our own ways. I consider this song to be "art" that I really enjoy listening to, and has meaning to me because her songs take me back to fun times when I was younger!

This song is called "Surfin' USA" by the Beach Boys. I chose it because my grandma loves listening to it, singing to it, and dancing to it. I have grown to like it just because she likes it. I'm not sure I would like it as much if I had not heard her play it so many times. We discussed the Beach Boys in class and stated how the upbeat songs were about the leisure times (ex. Surfin' USA, taking place at the beach) and also discussed in class how there was little mention of school or making money in any of the songs. Its a fun song and appropriate for many settings!

This song is called "Stand By Me" and was originally performed by Ben E. King, but this video was put together by a group called "Playing for Change." The group goes all around the world and finds street musicians to play different parts of songs and combines the different parts to create awesome music. The goal of the group is to connect the world through music. They record songs like Stand By Me that encourage friendship and humanity. In class we spent a lot of time discussing what we consider art. This is a unique form of art, because the true art is how they combine works of the different musicians. I strongly suggest checking out some of their other stuff on youtube.

The link above is a clip of Cream playing 'Strange Brew'. I was actually listening to this song in my car this morning when I noticed myself counting the 4 beat rythm, just like we had done in class together.

Cream is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I am also a huge Eric Clapton fan (unless you are familiar with either Cream or Clapton, you probably won't recognize him in this clip!). My favorite music genre(s) are blues and heavily blues-influenced music - which is exactly what Cream is. I was very happy that this course spent a fair amount of time discussing the importance that blues plays in music today, especially since many of my peers don't give credit where it is due when it comes to music before our time.

I wanted to share this clip becuase it is a great example of REAL musicians playing real music that takes a lot of talent.

The link I posted is a song called "Can't Nobody" by 2NE1. I don't listen to asian music much, but this is one of the only asian groups I like. My Korean friend introduced me to this group.
This song relates to class because of the hip-hop section. In class we talked about how hip-hop and pop has spread across the world and I thought 2NE1 is a good example of hip-hop in Asia. It is a lot different than American music as you can see and is pretty interesting.

The link that I have posted is a video by John Mayer called "Waiting On The World To Change". When we were learning and watching videos in class of the riots on OSU Campus and the infamous Kent State shootings, I could not help but this of this song and the meaningful words behind the lyrics. This is just one example of how music is related to events in the world.

One musical influence that we focused on in class was The Beatles. I personally have grown up listening to The Beatles thanks to my dad and older brothers. The link above is for my favorite Beatles song, "Let It Be". This song is extremely influential to me; it encourages listeners to move on from their problems and leaving them behind. I think that it is important for my generation to be exposed to such classic music such as this. As a Beatles fan, I was very excited that they were in our textbook and mentioned in class lectures.

Discussed in class was the folk movement. Some prominent members of the movement were Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, and Woodie Guthrie. The link above is the song "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show. I like it because it's modern day folk and it's also pretty catchy. It's hard to go social gatherings and not here it somewhere. It may be the sign of a resurgence of folk culture.

We had discussed in class the effect of Blues in several different kinds of music. It had an vast impact of Elvis. We also discussed how revolutionary Elvis was with his music and stage performance. Above is a link to his song Suspicious Minds. I like it because it's upbeat and was far ahead of its time. Although it doesn't seem bad to me, for its time, it was extremely suggestive and criticized by many.

The link above is the song "Summertime" by Janis Joplin. I really really like this song because of the way it sounds and the culture in which it came from. Joplin is singing her heart out and the music is very trippy. It's the kind of music that I can just sit in the dark and go where ever my mind travels. I also like it because of the Haight-Ashbury movement. At it's prime it was one of the most unique places in America. It was drugs, sex, and rock and roll at it's finest. Nobody could tell you who to be or how to act, everybody was their own person and I think that's something that is lost today.

This song, Seek And Destroy by Metallica, rminded me of when we talked about improvements in technology allowed concerts to become bigger. This clip is from '89 in a sold out stadium that could not have been possible without those advancements. Big speakers and lights allowed for the band to play shows similar to this one for over 20 years.

This song, Paranoid by Black Sabbath, was actually partially played on Dr. Funk's video. Black Sabbath was one of the bands specifically mentioned in the text. They were one of the many hard rock bands to surface during the early 70s

Blink 182 - First Date. In class, we covered the early beginnings of the punk movement, and this is what came out of it in the late 90s. They followed many of the same rules as the punk bands described in the text, and they had a complete non-conformist attitude.

Led Zeppelin - Rock and Roll
Led Zep was another band that was talked about in class and in the text. they were a hard rock band that came about in the 70s and are definitely one of my all time favorites. They also had very deep Blues roots.

    Britney Spears- Piece of Me
This song and music video both are a huge moment of self expression from the artist saying she does not care how she is perceived and nothing will ever be good enough for the public. I really do find that this song is empowering and is just really fun to dance to with friends. I also love Britney Spears so it just solidifies for me what I like about her and her attitude of just wanting to life her life for herself. It relates the class because when we talked about graffiti and tattoos being a way for people to use art as a way to say they don't care what others think about them I can relate that idea to this song.

This sounds pretty bad, but I didn't realize that Diana Ross was in The Supremes until we talked about it in lecture. The lecture about Motown inspired me to go online and look up some more motown songs on youtube and create a motown station on pandora's online radio. I never knew how many Motown songs I knew. "Home Is Where The Hated Is" by the late, great, Gil Scott Heron is a 1971 song about the hardships faced by the black community during that time. His highly lyrical content commented on various social issues of the day like drug abuse and prejudice. Gil Scott Heron was one of the most influential artists who paved the way and set the bar for modern hip hop and spoken word.

Summertime" by Miles Davis has always been a favorite of mine. Something about the intro of the song just sets the mood perfectly for a warm summer afternoon or evening. Miles recorded this song in the late 1950s and it is still heavily played to this day. Many hip hop groups today have introduced jazz samples in their music to give it a unique sound. The spread of hip hop has been incredible and can be found in all corners of the world. Some examples of jazz-hop are the Jazz Liberatorz out of France, Shin-Ski of Japan, and Gramatik of Slovenia.

As we talked about in class Bob Dylan played a huge part in the folk movement. I grew up listening to artists such as Bob Dylan and have formed my own modern folk love. Above I have posted a link to a Dylan cover song by Magnet and Gemma Hayes - Lay Lady Lay. This is one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs and Magnet does an awesome job recreating it by adding a woman's voice (Gemma Hayes) yet still keeping it similar to the original. I hope you like it!

During class we covered many famous rock n' roll, folk, disco, and R & B bands. Yet, one band (or man) that I wish we could have spoke and learned more about is Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. My mom and dad have been die hard Springsteen fans since I can remember. I'm pretty sure the first songs I ever heard were Thunder Road and Secret Garden, which are now my favorite two songs by the boss. His music relates to so many things we discussed in class and if you don't know or haven't listened to it, you're definitely missing out! He plays the guitar, the harmonica, writes songs, sings with his wife, and knows how to put on a good show. Enjoy!

Bone Thugs N Harmony are a unique Cleveland rap group that incorporate harmonizing vocals with a very rapid lyrical delivery. The song is called "First of the Month" and would have been more appropriate had I posted it yesterday. The song tells a story of cashing in welfare checks to buy alcohol and drugs; topics which influenced many of their predecessors in the jazz and funk genres. Bone Thugs samples many artists from those styles of music such as George Clinton, Barry White, and Isaac Hayes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S22PlaFSuaY).

We talked about Jimi Hendrix and how he was the most influential figures in rock music. His trendy style set fashion trends along with his look a like Bob Dylan hairstyle. Hendrix worked with some of the most important figures in rhythm and blues, rock and roll and rock. The link above is one of Hendrix’s popular songs. Purple haze was recoded in 1967 and released as a single in the United States and the United Kingdom. I like this song because Hendrix wrote this song after a dream he once had. This song sounds like Hendrix was talking about a girl he was falling in love with. I think it’s an interesting song, its upbeat but at the same time very chill if you really listen to the lyrics.

It makes me think of summer for some reason, associated with happy times. This is a music video of Shape of my Heart by the 90’s band the Backstreet Boys. I like this because the Backstreet Boys were a huge part of my childhood. The first tape I ever owned for my Walkman was a tape of this group so they mark the start of the shaping of my musical taste. In class I learned that the Backstreet Boys were a manufactured group by Lou Pearlman who manufactured many pop music groups in the 90s and was sued for fraud by most of them. I remember learning about groups like the Monkees who were manufactured earlier for a TV show by Don Kirshner and find it interesting that music groups have been manufactured by individuals for different purposes over a long period of time.

I like this cover of Bob Dylans “It aint me babe” by Joan Baez because I just heard it covered again in a song by one of my favorite bands, the Fleet Foxes.
Listen to the Fleet Foxes cover here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKxqwUiHpf0
This demonstrates what we learned in class about how Bob Dylan and Joan Baez were both incredibly influential folk artists, Joan Baez just as much as Bob Dylan was. I discovered that they were so influential that songs they played are being used in modern songs of similar folk like styles today. This is meaningful to me because I can get more interested in the music I listen to by understanding where it came from.

This song is called Yonkers by Tyler, the Creater. It stirred up a lot of controversy when it was released because it was Tyler, the Creator's first mainstream video. His music has always been violent and vulgar and people realized it with this video. Although I do not necessarily agree with all of the things that he does or says, I do believe that he is a lyrical artist and is one of the best to do it especially considering his age. This is a song by Gangstarr called Moment of Truth. I believe that it is one of the most underrated rap songs of all time. The rap duo of Guru and DJ Premier were never really mainstream and I believe that a lot of people missed a lot of positive messages because of it. Some of the most deep and lyrical songs ever made came from Gangstarr. I believe that telling a story in the form of rhymes is art in a very pure form. This class helped me realize that what Gangstarr was doing was more than just rap. It was an art form.

I like this music video, "Man Down" by Rihanna because it really tells a story. This music also brings me back to her roots of being an island girl because it sounds so cool. I just love how I am able to watch this video and relate it to the lyrics she is singing.

I relly enjoy this music video because of the dancing! It brings me back to 80's and 90's music where they would focus so much on dancing and also sing their song. This is really what is going on here and it is really keeping my attention.

Lady Gaga's video of Judas is extremely interesting. With the knowledge that I learned in this class, I actually go into depth when analyzing this video. Before, I probably would have just called it weird and eccentric, but now, I think it is extremely religiously controversial. I'm not in agreement with her choice of portraying the video or even the lyrics of the song, but I can appreciate her creativity and independence in society.

This video, Love the Way You Lie, is with Rihanna and Eminem and it is one of my favorite videos. Art Education has made me look at the video in a way that I didn't look at it before; I can appreciate the art of the video more. The fire is a constant symbol in the video and appears to symbolize the anger and lust that the couple have for each other that makes them inseparable.
